Dear Reader

Save Ealing's Centre's campaigning on the redevelopments in Ealing Broadway has raised important issues of a social nature. One is the failure to include provision that would fulfil the Council's stated aim to "realise the borough's potential as a leisure and cultural destination".

SEC's recently published Vision statement for the town centre includes a proposal to set up an Arts and Leisure Centre for Ealing. See the section in the Vision on Arts & Leisure.

SEC's Arts and Leisure Group has been set up to further this objective. We are writing to you to explain the project and ask for your support.

We are in talks with the Council about converting Ealing Town Hall into the central part of an Arts and Leisure Centre. We are also seeking provision for indoor sports. The aim is to encourage people of all ages to take up and/or further their interests in music, dance, sport, etc and with specific interests to attract young people.

A converted Town Hall could house many arts facilities, including studios for music, recording, art and dance, with multi-purpose rooms for crafts, teaching, talks and meetings. The Victoria Hall could be converted into a flexible space for concerts, films, conferences and general performance use.

An important part of our proposal is that the Centre would be run by an independent Trust that would engage professional arts administrators. It would be available to local clubs and societies and engage with other organisations such as Questors Theatre, Ealing Studios, TVU, West London College and the cinema that is currently being re-built as a multi-screen.

An Arts centre could be very exciting, acting as a magnet to attract people into the heart of the town, thereby broadening central Ealing's appeal. As a cultural hub, it would publicise and encourage arts and leisure activities around the whole borough.

We are appealing for public backing to demonstrate to the local and national authorities, who can help make this happen, that there is a swell of local support for this project. Please forward this email on to your contacts.
